Why Transfer Video Tapes Now?
VHS tapes degrade over time - magnetic particles fall off, colours fade, audio deteriorates. Tapes stored in garages, attics, or non-climate-controlled spaces are especially at risk. Every year you wait, quality degrades further.
Home video captures irreplaceable moments - birthdays, holidays, family gatherings. Once the tape deteriorates beyond playback, those memories are lost forever.
How to Transfer Your Tapes
Understanding Tape Formats
VHS/VHS-C: Standard definition (720x480). Hi8/Video8: Similar to VHS but smaller tapes. MiniDV: Digital but still tape-based, best quality consumer format. All deteriorate over time - digitise urgently if tapes are 20+ years old.
Capture Quality Settings
Capture at full quality even though source is low resolution. Use lossless or high-bitrate codec (ProRes, DNxHD, or high-quality H.264). Storage is cheap - don't compromise quality. You can always compress later, but can't add quality back.
Real-Time Transfer
Video transfer happens in real-time - 2-hour tape takes 2 hours to transfer. Plan accordingly. Clean VCR heads before starting (cleaning tape). Monitor transfer to catch dropouts or errors. Have spare tapes for problematic originals.
