Why Choose a Wireless Lavalier?

Wireless lavalier (lapel) microphones are the professional choice for interviews. They capture clear, consistent audio regardless of head movement, and their small size makes them unobtrusive for nervous family members.

Unlike camera-mounted microphones that sound distant and roomy, a lavalier placed close to the mouth captures intimate, broadcast-quality audio that viewers can enjoy for generations.

How to Get the Best Results

Positioning the Lapel Mic

Clip the mic 15-20cm (6-8 inches) below the chin, centred on the chest. This captures clear voice whilst avoiding clothing rustle. For women wearing necklaces, position just above or below the jewellery.

Hiding the Wire

Thread the cable under clothing from the mic position down to the transmitter pack (clipped to belt or waistband). This prevents the cable from being visible and reduces handling noise.

Avoiding Rustle

Use the provided clip or a piece of medical tape to secure the cable to clothing. This prevents it from rubbing against fabric, which creates distracting noise.

Testing Range

Before recording, walk around the interview space to test signal strength. Most systems work up to 30-75m, but walls and furniture can reduce range.

Pro Tips

  • Always use the furry windscreen outdoors - even slight breeze will ruin audio
  • Charge transmitters and receivers the night before - nothing worse than dead batteries mid-interview
  • Record a test clip and listen with headphones before the actual interview
  • Keep receivers close to camera - the further away, the more likely dropouts
