Why Natural Light?

Natural window light is free, beautiful, and familiar. It creates a comfortable, intimate atmosphere that puts interview subjects at ease. Many of the most beautiful family portraits ever made used nothing but window light.

With a simple reflector and understanding of positioning, you can achieve professional results without any powered lights at all.

How to Master Natural Light

Window Light Positioning

Position subject 1-2 metres from window, facing window at 45° angle. This creates dimensional lighting with gentle shadow modelling. Overcast days produce the softest, most flattering light. Direct sun requires diffusion (sheer curtain or shower curtain).

Reflector Techniques

Place white or silver reflector opposite window to bounce light back and fill shadows. Silver creates brighter fill (more dramatic), white creates soft fill (more natural). Gold adds warmth (great for mature skin). Position reflector so subject sees gentle glow, not spotlight.

Time of Day Considerations

Morning and late afternoon light is warmer and more directional. Midday sun is harsh - requires heavy diffusion. Overcast days are perfect - huge soft light source. For consistent results, film at same time of day for multi-day projects.

Background Control

Don't position subject with window behind them - creates silhouette. Window should light subject's face. Background should be darker than subject to create separation. This is fundamental to professional-looking natural light portraits.

Pro Tips

  • Reflectors are held by assistant or clamped to light stand - free hands mean better interviews
  • White walls and ceilings act as giant reflectors - use them
  • Black fabric (negative fill) removes light and increases contrast - useful for dramatic looks
  • Translucent reflectors (scrims) placed in window diffuse harsh direct sun beautifully
  • Window light direction changes through the day - scout location beforehand
