Why Use Softboxes?

Bare LED panels produce harsh, unflattering shadows. Softboxes transform that hard light into something beautiful - soft, wraparound illumination that mimics overcast daylight.

The result is skin that looks smooth and natural, without harsh shadows under eyes and noses. Your interview subjects will look their best without even knowing why.

How to Get Professional Results

Softbox Size Selection

Larger softboxes create softer light. 60x60cm is minimum for interviews. 80x80cm is ideal for single subjects. 120x80cm for couples or group shots. The larger relative to subject distance, the softer the light. Position softbox close for maximum softness.

Grid vs No Grid

Softboxes with grid (fabric honeycomb) control light direction - prevents spill onto background. Without grid, light spreads everywhere. For interviews: grid when you want controlled background exposure, no grid for more natural ambient feel.

DIY Diffusion Solutions

Shower curtain liner (white, frosted) makes excellent diffusion. Hang it on C-stand between light and subject. Baking paper (parchment) works for small lights but fire risk with hot lights. Professional diffusion fabrics (1/4 to Full Grid Cloth) are worth investment.

Pro Tips

  • Clean softboxes regularly - dust reduces light transmission significantly
  • Inner silver lining = more output. Inner white = softer quality. Choose based on needs.
  • Position softbox at 45° angle to subject, slightly above eye level for most flattering result
  • Softboxes make enormous difference to interview comfort - subjects don't squint
